The History of Roborough
Roborough is a village in the South Hams of Devon. It lies just outside the northern boundary of the city of Plymouth on the main road to Tavistock, and is a popular dormitory village.
In the main street, long since bypassed by a modern dual carriageway, there is a very old pub named after the family surname of the Lopes, Baron Roborough.
As tax has bitten through estate duties since the 1920s so this family have retreated in stages from the grand mansion at Maristow down on the River Tamar to Roborough House just off the Tavistock Road and latterly to Gnaton, a smaller mansion on the coast near Noss Mayo.
